Cesspools - are older septic systems, and are made of concrete blocks or flat fieldstone cylinders that have holes in the sidewalls are surrounded by stone.
Septic Systems - are made up of a solid tank, which is referred to as the "main tank" and some type of a leaching facility off of that. There are many types of leaching systems, also known as soil absorption systems. There are, however, two general types of facilities to carry off the overflow water from the septic tank: (1) trench systems and (2) drainage pits. Trench systems - also called leaching fields, drain fields, or finger systems - generally consist of a network of perforated pipes laid in a gravel-lined trench. Leach fields are formed by perforated pipes which are interconnected and laid in a gravel-lined trench.

Soil absorption pits - also known as beehives, are basically the same idea as a cesspool, but have a regular tank off of the house and pit off of that. If the solid material is allowed to overflow from the tank into the absorption area, the area will clog and the system will fail. To avoid this failure, we recommend that an average family of three have their tank pumped annually. Regular maintenance is inexpensive and will save you money in the long run. Also, if you have recently purchased a home, we recommend you begin a maintenance program as soon as possible.
Types of Systems
All household waste is disposed of through the septic system. The quantity and composition of waste generated in the home caries according to the number of residents, their personal water usage, and the water-utilizing appliances in the home.
